RTEMS Operating System

The Real-Time Executive for Multiprocessor Systems or RTEMS is a full featured RTOS that supports a variety of open API and interface standards. Major decisions about RTEMS are made by the Steering Committee, guided by the Mission Statement. We encourage everyone to contribute changes and help testing RTEMS, and we provide access to our development sources with anonymous CVS and snapshots. We strive to provide regular, high quality releases, which we want to work well on a wide range of embedded targets using cross development from a variety of hosts including GNU/Linux, MS-Windows, FreeBSD, Mingw, Cygwin, and Solaris.

ESA Summer of Code in Space

The European Space Agency is sponsoring the first ever Summer of Code In Space. The RTEMS Project was accepted as a participating organization in this program.

Please include basic information in the SOCIS project information section. But start the section with a link to your proposal as a Google Doc following this format: RTEMS Proposal Template

Share that document with mentors from the RTEMS Project so they can make inline comments.

We have highlighted some projects we think are both important to RTEMS and to the space community. These are listed in the High Priority section of the RTEMS Open Projects page. If you are interested in a particular project or want to suggest your own, feel free to do so. Information on getting started is at the RTEMS Summer of Code page in the Wiki.

If you don't want to install the RTEMS Development Environment, then there is an updated Fedora RTEMS Development Environment virtual machine image available. See the links above.

4.10 Release Branch: RTEMS 4.10 (CVS tag rtems-4-10-branch) (latest is 4.10.2)
4.9 Release Branch: RTEMS 4.9 (CVS tag rtems-4-9-branch) (latest is 4.9.6)

Legacy Branches and Support

OAR recognizes that a project using RTEMS may decide to use a particular release branch and not upgrade to a newer branch that includes new features. The RTEMS Project follows other free software projects and only supports two active branches and the development head with support declining on the older of the two branches. As a support service, OAR offers legacy support with bug fixes for closed branches.

4.8 Release Branch: The current legacy support release is 4.8.4 and addresses over 20 issues which were in the last public release of 4.8.2.
4.7 Release Branch: The current legacy support release is 4.7.5 and addresses over 35 issues which were in the last public release of the last public release of 4.7.3.
4.6 Release Branch: The current legacy support release is 4.6.9 and addresses over 50 issues which were in the last public release of the last public release of 4.6.9.
