NTeething Pains

I'm trying to work through a build of RTEMS for the 'sh' target, under
WinNT/Cygwin-20b, and getting some bruises.
1) Since I had built 'binutils', 'egcs' and 'newlib' without major glitches
(after a few words of advice here), I stayed with the 'cygwin' installation
I have been using vs. redoing per sec.7.3 of _getting_started_.
2) 'configure' hung at the points were it attempted to execute the
cross-compiled "conftest.exe" images, so I forced those test results and got
a configuration (of unknown viability). (This was independent of whether
'sh' or 'bash' was used as the shell.)
3) Attempts to actually build RTEMS crashed on two problems:
a) 'make' apparently wouldn't recurse into directories
(in spite of the successful 'egcs' builds, _et_al_), nor do I find the *.cfg
or <INSTALLATION_POINT>/rtems/<BOARD_SUPPORT_PACKAGE> branches of the
directory. I do have (in my settings):
/c/RTEMS/egcs-1.1b-binutils-2.9.1-newlib-1.8.0/[bin, lib, sh-rtems]
directories.
b) if I enter (say) ./c and run
"% make RTEMS_BSP=gensh1 all", it fails to find the *.cfg templates, nor
(again) to recurse directories.
I attach snippets of my changes to rtems-4.0.0/configure and the tail of the
top-level 'make' log. Repeated invocation of 'make' just replays the last
block of the attached log.
Any suggestions?
Thanks-
