Hitachi SH1 version of RTEMS 4.0.0 for CYGWIN Host

RTEMS users,

after a big lot of times I have finally a complete environment of RTEMS
4.0.0 for Hitachi SH1 in Windows 95 and NT4 hosts.

My best regards to Mr.Mark Farnan and Mr.David J.Fiddes for their
precious answers.

I have included a detailed step-list to obtain RTEMS for Hitachi SH1 in
Cygwin32 (I hope it is useful).

!!! Attention, this is my personal interpretation of Chapter 7: Using
MS-Windows as a Development Host from Geoffroy Montel & David Fiddes. To
complete reference read that section !!!

Attached at this email you have a copy of modified file configure to
build RTEMS (see point 27).

--- BEGIN ---

00) Use only Windows NT4 OS (Service Pack >= 4). Windows 95/98 are too
much fragile. Once you have obtained the complete environment for your
desidered CPU you can copy and use all in a computer with Windows 95/98
(I don't have found any problems).
! My system is an Intel Pentium 350 Mhz with 64MB RAM !

01) Download all necessary files :

    -   ftp://ftp.oarcorp.com/pub/rtems/4.0.0/
        rtems-4.0.0.tgz

    -   ftp://ftp.oarcorp.com/pub/rtems/4.0.0/c_tools/
        binutils-2.9.1-rtems-diff-19981027.gz
        egcs-1.1b-rtems-diff-19981028.gz
        gdb-4.17-rtems-diff-19981027.gz
        newlib-1.8.0-rtems-diff-19981027.gz

    - I hope you have this file because it is expired from known egcs
ftp.
        egcs-1.1b.tar.gz

    -   ftp://ftp.gnu.org/pub/gnu/binutils/
        binutils-2.9.1.tar.gz

    -   ftp://sourceware.cygnus.com/pub/newlib/
        newlib-1.8.0.tar.gz

    -   ftp://sourceware.cygnus.com/pub/cygwin/cygwin-b20/
        full.exe

    -   http://www.users.surfaid.org/~fiddes/coldfire/make-3.77.zip
        make-3.77.zip

    -   http://www.lancs.ac.uk/people/cpaap/pfe/
        Pfe101i.zip

02) !! attention !! substitute followings <drive> with your drive letter
(C, D, ....).

03) Install Cygwin32 20.0 (named full.exe 14.247.216 bytes) to
"<drive>:\rtems" base directory.

04) Modify "<drive>:\rtems\cygwin-b20\cygnus.bat" file to :

    @ECHO OFF
    SET MAKE_MODE=UNIX
    SET CYGWIN=binmode
    SET HOME=/home
    SET PATH=
    SET PATH=%PATH%<drive>:\rtems\cygwin-b20\H-i586-cygwin32\bin
    bash

05) Start cygnus.bat in <drive>:\rtems\cygwin-b20\

06) Mounting a "/" directory :

    umount /
    mount -b <drive>:\\rtems /

07) At mount command result is :

    Device           Directory   Type     Flags
    <drive>:\rtems   /           native   text=binary
    [other devices]  .........   ......   ...........

08) Exit from bash with "exit" command and recall cygnus.bat.

09) Create working directories with :

    mkdir /archive
    mkdir /bin
    mkdir /build
    mkdir /build/binutils
    mkdir /build/egcs
    mkdir /build/rtems
    mkdir /home
    mkdir /source
    mkdir /tmp

10) Prepare binary files :

    cd /cygwin-b20/h-i586-cygwin32/bin
    mv sh.exe old_sh.exe
    cp bash.exe sh.exe
    cp sh.exe /bin/sh.exe
    cp bash.exe /bin/bash.exe

11) Extract make.exe from make-3.77.zip and copy it in
/cygwin-b20/h-i586-cygwin32/bin.

12) Copy all files listed at item 01 in /archive directory.

13) Extract binutils files and apply the patch :

    cd /source
    tar xzf ../archive/binutils-2.9.1.tar.gz
    cd binutils-2.9.1
    zcat ../../archive/binutils-2.9.1-rtems-diff-19981027.gz | patch -p1

14) Configure binutils :

    cd /build/binutils
    /source/binutils-2.9.1/configure --verbose \
                                     --target=sh-rtems \
                                     --prefix=/gcc-sh-rtems \
                                     --with-gnu-as \
                                     --with-gnu-ld

15) Launch make binutils :

    make

16) Launch last phase of make binutils :

    make -k install

17) Exit from bash with "exit" command.

18) Modify "<drive>:\rtems\cygwin-b20\cygnus.bat" file to :

    @ECHO OFF
    SET MAKE_MODE=UNIX
    SET CYGWIN=binmode
    SET HOME=/home
    SET PATH=
    SET PATH=%PATH%<drive>:\rtems\gcc-sh-rtems\bin;
    SET PATH=%PATH%<drive>:\rtems\cygwin-b20\H-i586-cygwin32\bin
    bash

19) Start cygnus.bat in <drive>:\rtems\cygwin-b20\

20) Extract egcs & newlib and apply the patches :

    cd /source
    tar xzf ../archive/egcs-1.1b.tar.gz
    tar xzf ../archive/newlib-1.8.0.tar.gz
    cd egcs-1.1b
    zcat ../../archive/egcs-1.1b-rtems-diff-19981028.gz | patch -p1
    cd /source/newlib-1.8.0
    zcat ../../archive/newlib-1.8.0-rtems-diff-19981028.gz | patch -p1

21) Remove directories from egcs :

    With IExplore remove :

    <drive>:\rtems\source\egcs-1.1b\libf2c
    <drive>:\rtems\source\egcs-1.1b\gcc\objc
    <drive>:\rtems\source\egcs-1.1b\gcc\f

22) Create link to newlib :

    cd /source/egcs-1.1b
    ln -s ../newlib-1.8.0/newlib newlib
    ln -s ../newlib-1.8.0/libgloss libgloss

23) Configure egcs & newlib :

    cd /build/egcs
    /source/egcs-1.1b/configure --verbose \
                                --target=sh-rtems \
                                --prefix=/gcc-sh-rtems \
                                --with-gnu-as \
                                --with-gnu-ld \
                                --with-newlib

    After lot of time comapare this message :

    "*** this configuration is not supported in the following
subdirectories :
     textinfo target -libgloss
     (Any others directories should still work fine.)"

    Ignore this message, all is ok !

24) Launch a make cross :

    make cross

25) Launch last phase of make :

    make -k install

26) Extract rtems :

    cd /source
    tar xzf ../archive/rtems-4.0.0.tgz

27) Modify the "configure" file in /source/rtems-4.0.0 to correct a bug
in Cygwin1.DLL :

    During configure phase, the script try to execute some executables
    (embedded target dependent) to determine if you are in
cross-environment.

    An error in use of CreateProcess API (Win32), into Cygwin1.DLL,
    not evaluate if the executable isn't a Windows program, and
    when call it cause the crash of bash.

    To resolve this bug we have two possibilities :

    1) to modify the configure script which not should execute the test.

       or ....

    2) download and substitute the Cygwin1.DLL which Cygwin1.DLL from
Mr.David J.Fiddes.

    I have tried the first (1) and all work fine. Following are the
changes of configure:

        #!!! removed to solve a NT error !!!
        #
        #       if { (eval echo configure:1574: \"$ac_link\") 1>&5;
...... <cut by me>
        #         ac_cv_prog_cc_works=yes
        # # If we can't run a trivial program, we are probably
using a cross compiler.
        #         if (./conftest; exit) 2>/dev/null; then
        #           ac_cv_prog_cc_cross=no
        #         else
        #           ac_cv_prog_cc_cross=yes
        #         fi
        #       else
        # echo "configure: failed program was:" >&5
        #         cat conftest.$ac_ext >&5
        #         ac_cv_prog_cc_works=no
        #       fi

        #!!! simulate the test. All work fine !
        ac_cv_prog_cc_works=yes
        ac_cv_prog_cc_cross=yes

     (and)

        #!!! removed to solve a NT error !!!
        #
        #       if { (eval echo configure:1781: \"$ac_link\") 1>&5;
...... <cut by me>
        #         ac_cv_prog_cxx_works=yes
        # # If we can't run a trivial program, we are probably
using a cross compiler.
        #         if (./conftest; exit) 2>/dev/null; then
        #           ac_cv_prog_cxx_cross=no
        #         else
        #           ac_cv_prog_cxx_cross=yes
        #         fi
        #       else
        # echo "configure: failed program was:" >&5
        #         cat conftest.$ac_ext >&5
        #         ac_cv_prog_cxx_works=no
        #       fi

        #!!! simulate the test. All work fine !
        ac_cv_prog_cxx_works=yes
        ac_cv_prog_cxx_cross=yes

    P.S: for second solutions the DLL fixed is available from :
    http://www.users.surfaid.org/~fiddes/coldfire/cygwin-rtems-fix.zip

28) Configure rtems :

    cd /build/rtems
    /source/rtems-4.0.0/configure --target=sh-rtems \
                                  --disable-tests \
                                  --disable-networking \
                                  --disable-posix \
                                  --disable-cxx \
                                  --enable-rtemsbsp=gensh1 \
                                  --prefix=/gcc-sh-rtems \

    In this example I would RTEMS with the minimum functionality.
    To obtain a complete list of available options call :

        /source/rtems-4.0.0/configure --help

    P.S: during configure to appear a message which indicate
unavailability of
    Perl. This isn't a problem for that CPU. In my computer Perl isn't
installed.

29) Launch make rtems :

    make all

30) Launch last phase of make :

    make install

31) Well. The rtems environment for Hitachi SH1 in Windows NT4 is now
complete.
    In /gcc-sh-rtems/ we have all necessary to start ours games.

Good Work !!!!!
