make VARIANT=debug behavior

Subject: make VARIANT=debug behavior

When I build the 20021007 snapshot with make VARIANT=debug all goes well 
except when I install it, the *_g.rel files get renamed and lose the _g 
at the end. This causes make debug to fail for applications like 
hello_world.

Am I doing something wrong or is there a problem in the distribuion?
