cygwin build_alias issue (and a possible workaround... really this time...)

Subject: cygwin build_alias issue (and a possible workaround... really this time...)

And it hung at iteration 448.  Looks like bash, four instances of sh, and
sort are left hanging.  Not using any cpu time, and crtl+c won't release
the hang.
