10ms is the default tick rate for RTEMS, and a pretty standard tick rate for
other OSes. Until recently, that was the rate for Linux on x86.
We use a 1ms tick since our systems (Power Utilities) SCADA like 1ms resolution on all digital inputs and a lot of our timeouts are based on small millsecond times. This is on a 90MHz Coldfire processor with no dramas.
