We use a 1ms tick since our systems (Power Utilities) SCADA like 1ms resolution on all digital inputs and a lot of our timeouts are based on small millsecond times. This is on a 90MHz Coldfire processor with no dramas.

Most if not all of the systems I know that OAR has consulted on use either a 1 millisecond or 500 microsecond tick. FOr the 500 microsecond tick, the CPU has to be pretty fast and the application had to have good reason.
