Memory and CPU separation for one. ARINC-653 calls for
control over those in a way that leads you to separate
"processes" that may in fact be their own operatingsystems.
It is also a neat way to run RTEMS and GNU/Linux side-by-side
on the same hardware. Allocating a portion of the processor
to each and maintain real-time requirements.
This type of architecture could also be used to provide for
some fault recovery protocol.
I am not great at explaining this particular thing but hopefully
you can see where it could lead when you have protection
around the RTOS side.
