Installing RTEMS on my host machine

Hi there,
               I use a debian desktop at campus:

Linux version 2.6.26-2-amd64 (Debian 2.6.26-17lenny2) (dannf at debian.org)
(gcc version 4.1.3 20080704 (prerelease) (Debian 4.1.2-25))

and I am trying to install RTEMS 4.9. I am completely new to RTEMS.

I had tried both approaches: RPMs and Zipped Tar Files using the Getting
Started with RTEMS<http://www.rtems.com/onlinedocs/releases/rtemsdocs-4.9.2/share/rtems/html/started/index.html>manual.

So, apparently I need root access for any of both approaches to work, right?
Is there any workaround to that?

Besides, it seems like depending on your target architecture gcc, binutils
and newlib all get patched. Would that affect my old gcc compiler? Or will
it remain independent from my gcc shell command?
