The cable modems in Advent Networks' UAG2xx families each have an ARM CPU running RTEMS. The modems can handle about 50Mbps of traffic (~70,000 packets per second). They also provide most of the features of current broadband routers, including:

    • web configuration interface
    • network address translation (with application level gateways)
    • port forwarding

When we were trying to decide which operating system to use on the product, we compared several operating systems, concentrating on RTEMS and VxWorks. The CPU vendor already had a reference design using VxWorks. Based on past experience with both VxWorks and RTEMS, we chose RTEMS. As it turned out, our RTEMS based modem outperforms the CPU vendor's VxWorks based modem.
